Stainless Steel Vs Porcelain Kitchen Sinks

Stainless Steel Sinks

So, stainless steel sinks are an industry standard these days – and for good reason. When treated properly, they are durable and can last a long time.

When picking a stainless steel sink, focus on the gauge number. Lower gauge numbers signify thicker steel, meaning your sink will last longer than a sink with a low gauge number.

When cleaning a stainless steel sink, be sure to use non-abrasive cleaners. Over time, abrasives will damage the sink. Also, steer clear of cleaners that use chloride compounds which can erode the sink. Finally, avoid dropping silverware into your stainless steel sink as it can scratch and even weaken the material.

Porcelain Sinks

Porcelain sinks are more fragile than their stainless steel counterparts. And porcelain sinks are made up of a cast-iron center and coated in a porcelain finish that is baked on.

While durable, the finish can be chipped off. To prevent this, you can place a rack of mat at the bottom of the sink, to prevent it from being scratched by falling silverware.

As for cleaning, be sure to avoid letting acidic materials from sitting in the sink. Coffee grounds are a prime example. And to keep the porcelain shining, scrub the sink with more delicate brushes and avoid using steel wool or abrasive sponges. Rinse the sink with water after each use.

Although porcelain sinks may require some extra care, seeing their beautiful white shine can be a serious benefit, as it looks quite stellar with many kitchen designs.
